360modern is a community of modernists including architects, Modern furniture and art experts, non-profits, state historical organizations, county historical groups, and contractors. Today, we’re continuing our showcase of the people and businesses that make up the Seattle Modern community.

cameron-reithWe had a chance to have Cameron Reith from GreenHome Solutions answer a few questions about eco friendly building materials, woodworking, the family business, and life.

Without further adieu…

What is GreenHome Solutions, and what led you to start it?

Greenhome Solutions is a local, family owned and operated company, focused on eco-friendly building products. We offer everything from flooring, countertops, and cabinetry, to siding, decking, reclaimed lumber and finishes for example.

We come from contracting and real estate backgrounds with a passion for the environment and well made products. “wood geeks”. We saw a need for a source for these “green” building products under one roof. A place for homeowners and professionals to learn, see, touch, design, and purchase materials for their projects. Our mission was to make these products available AND affordable. We’re finally achieving many of these goals 8 years in.

What are you most excited about in terms of sustainable building materials?

We’re excited about the ever changing landscape. With awareness rising about the importance of these products, ie. our indoor air-quality, preserving our resources, and supporting our local economies, it has allowed for more opportunities. We’re constantly introducing and creating new and unique products to bring to market. It’s no longer a “fad” or a “trend” to go green. It’s mandatory in our minds and it’s up to us to offer the best products that we can and make them obtainable by all. This goal and purpose never gets old.

What sorts of products have you placed in modern and mid-century modern homes?

We try to have a good mix of products here at our showroom, but we’re definitely a modern dominated space. Probably due to our mostly modern tastes spilling over into our displays, but also our customer base being smack dab in the middle of Seattle demands that. Our cabinet/furniture line, Duncan Woodworks, is as modern as it gets and can really set the stage for a modern style. Flat panel and simple shaker doors only, sharp clean lines, some exposed europly, etc. Wood paneling has become another popular item that finds its way into the mid-century modern home. Thinner 2cm countertops with square edge detail and matte finishes like Caesarstone or Paperstone, Marmoleum + cork flooring for sure, Clayhaus tile out of Portland is another fun one.greenhome-solutions-wood-samples

How do you live modern?

We were lucky enough to have purchased our first home last year. It’s a 1958 California style mid-century modern home in the Richmond Beach area just North of Seattle. The only changes we’ve made so far are putting cork floors throughout with a nice matte finish and of course our furniture choices. The occasional Duncan Woodworks and West Elm piece of course, but what I think embodies our modern style the most, is simple, clean, uncluttered lines throughout. Open spaces that flow from inside to the outdoors. Outdoor living space is key, even in the Northwest!

Kitchen and baths are up next… although I’m tempted to keep the mint green sinks and tub, we’ll be documenting it closely so maybe we’ll have to reconnect after it’s done for some before and after.

Thanks, Cameron. For those interested in learning more, we encourage you to visit their showroom at 1210 W. Nickerson Street.
