Notable Seattle architect, Harold J. Nesland, made his mark in Seattle after graduating from the University of Washington in 1955. Partnering with his Architecture instructor, Omer Mithun, which resulted in the firm Mithun and Nesland, they established a thriving relationship with a variety of Seattle home builders and developers. Among Mithun and Nesland’s most notable projects is the Surrey Downs neighborhood in Bellevue, from 1954-1956. They also received national notoriety with designs featured in Better Homes & Garden’s Five Star Home Plan Book (Plan no. 2809-A & 3009-B). Presently, models of the homes can be found in multiple communities across the United States. The firm was also the recipient of two Seattle Times/AIA Home of the Year awards. Mithun and Nesland’s success was in large part due to the infusion of character in production homes by paying more attention to detail work and scale than was usual at the time. Around 1955, Mithun and Nesland parted ways, with Nesland then building notable projects on his own.
In Bellevue’s Woodridge community, this 4 bedroom home that Nesland built in 1959 is now on the market. Described as a, “Pure unadulterated Mid Century Modern Woodridge home sculpted to soak in the wealth of views from its shy half acre site.
